5 reasons why Western award shows are better than Indian award shows

The award season has come and gone with the Oscars given out on Sunday. Here are 5 reasons why I feel that when it comes to award shows, ‘West is Best’!

1. Indian award shows: Directed by Ekta Kapoor??

Each Indian award show runs as long as a regular Hindi feature film. A really poor and ridiculously lame feature film.

2. Copy + Paste Zindabad!

While hosts roast celebrities at every award ceremony, Indians resort to recycled Internet jokes and memes to fill the air time. And the worst part, they’re not even funny! No points for originality, fellas!

3. I hear dead people laughing!

Real giggles are better than fake hysterics. Just ask Janice!

4. Party all night!

While Western award ceremonies have none to very few song and dance performances, their Indian cousins just go like…

5. Who wins, who doesn’t?

Almost everyone who shows up to an award show in India walks away with something. DiCaprio, take note!

And the Oscar goes to…..

The Academy Awards or the Oscars, which are usually hosted in the last week of February or early March are a grand event at Hollywood. The ceremony is telecast live and garners millions of viewers around the world.  The first Academy Award was presented in the year 1929.It currently gives away awards in 24 categories, excluding special category awards like Academy Honorary award and others.  The awards are hosted at Dolby Theatre.

The Oscar statue is gold plated on a black metal base and depicts a knight holding a crusader’s sword standing on a reel of film with five spokes. Interestingly the five spokes represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.

Oscar awards have been a fascination for millions of people around the globe.  The Oscar’s night is a starry affair which continues to captivate viewers for many reasons.

India also has its share of winners and nominees.  A.R Rahman, Resul Pookutty and Gulzar won Oscars for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.  Satyajit Ray was awarded the honorary Oscar in 1992. Check out A.R.Rahman’s Oscar acceptance speech here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYXsE1dJdiw

Over the years, Oscars has been losing its sheen, with some of the organisers coming out in open to say how the Oscars now goes by marketing strategy and not quality.  Some studios pay millions of dollars to publicists to promote their films during the Oscar season and this is slowly leading to the degradation of the selection of films as some claim. In spite of all the controversies, Oscars rule the roost when it comes to award ceremonies.

Still forbidden to love

Another Valentine’s Day is round the corner, and the ‘miniscule fraction of the country’s population’, the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) community, is still fighting for their right to love.

In a landmark judgement in 2009 the Delhi High Court had deemed the Section 377 of IPC (Indian Penal Code) unconstitutional in so far as consensual sex was concerned citing fundamental right to equality but the 2013 Supreme Court verdict overturned the Delhi High Court stance.

The Supreme Court judgement said: “We hold that Section 377 IPC does not suffer from the vice of unconstitutionality and the declaration made by the Division Bench of the High court is legally unsustainable.” Justifying its ruling further it said, “The High Court overlooked that a miniscule fraction of the country’s population constitute lesbians, gays, bisexuals or transgenders and in last more than 150 years, less than 200 persons have been prosecuted for committing offence under Section 377.”

The supporters of the Supreme Court verdict claim that the Court has made clear that it is the act of sexual transgression that is condemned and not the identities of the people and that each case is considered in its own merit. While this may be the case on paper and technically right the LGBTQ activists note that this law is used by the authorities to terrorise and victimise members of a vulnerable community.

The spirit of the judgement itself has tone of defensive justification nearly implying that as it’s not the majority that’s being affected, consideration of the matter can be limited. Also the fact that the law itself goes back to the Victorian times and carries with it an oppressive legacy; by upholding a law such as this what message is the highest court of the country sending?

It has no doubt suggested the legislature is free to amend or repeal the law; but this directive has the suspicious looks of passing the buck. It is a point to note that it wasn’t the Government that challenged the Delhi Court’s verdict and several political parties and leaders have come out in the open condemning the Supreme Court judgement. Traces of inclusivity are beginning to show, but with a law that looks to thwart every democratic step, how far can the nation go?

10 bizarre myths about homosexuality

What do you do when you spot a homosexual on the road? Would you try to escape them, just like the majority of straight people who think them to be disgusting and a product of sin? And would you actually believe that they molest children and spread AIDS?

Somehow, stereotypes and misconceptions have displaced realities when it comes to defining homosexuality. Homosexuals have been accused of a lot of thing that they are not. Here are a few bizarre myths that are needs to be tossed out of a heterosexist and a homophobic rulebook!

  1. Parenting! Gay parents are never good as a father and a mother

Two homosexuals as a couple can never raise healthy and happy children. A child apparently requires a father and a mother in order to grow up to be a healthy adult and prosper in life.

elizabethabbott.files.wordpress.com

  1. Pedophilia! Homosexuals can’t be trusted around children

Most adults who sexually abuse children are gay men. Despite the spiteful notion of them being male-child molesters, there are no proven studies of relations between homosexuals, children and sexual molestation.

  1. Fashion! All gay men are feminine, they are into fashion, and they love to groom

People actually believe in such a thing as a ‘gay man’s personality’. ALL gay men are thought to be effeminate who love to take care of their appearances, display an interest in fashion and meticulously tidy their apartments.

  1. Childhood! Homosexuality is caused by bad parenting or childhood trauma

It is a result of bad parenting, and even homosexual parents, that lead to their children being lesbians and gays. Also, people become gay because they were sexually abused as children.

  1. Animals are straight! Homosexuality does not exist in nature

All animals are thought to be straight, and hence only male-female pairings is considered ‘natural’. However, there are many animals that practice same sex relationships –penguins, dolphins, giraffes, lions, and so on.

  1. Bad experiences! With the opposite sex leads to homosexuality

Another fallacy is that lesbians and gays seek out same sex relationships only after having bad experiences with members of the opposite sex.

  1. Drug abusers! Homosexuals are also mentally ill

Homosexuals are thought to be drug abusers and alcoholics, and suffer from a type of mental illness that can be cured by appropriate psychotherapy.

  1. Cure through good sex! With a member of the opposite gender

People who are homosexuals can be cured by having really good sex with a member of the opposite sex. Another malicious misconception is that homosexuals are promiscuous and are forever obsessed with sex.

  1. HIV/AIDS! Is a disease among homosexuals

In a heterosexist and homophobic society, AIDS is thought to be a disease of gay men. And it is globally transmitted through gay sex.

modernghana.com

  1. Homosexuality is a choice!

Being gay is a choice, after all no one is born gay! Hence, people can leave homosexuality, just like how they entered it. And the idea of same-sex attraction being genetic and biologically based is obviously dismissed. The biggest fallacy is that homosexuality is curable!

Urban verses: Slam poetry finds the City

Urban cultures hold a bowl of intriguing ingredients. In Bangalore, we have several slices of culture that make up the big pie that is the city. Music, fashion, food, theatre, dance, you name it! But something that started to catch on to Bangalore’s urban culture is spoken word poetry or, the punchier alternative, ‘slam poetry’. If you ever walk into a café where an enthusiastic individual monologues a considerable extent of verses, with accented facial expressions and hand gestures to an audience, you just waked into a slam poetry session.

Spoken word poetry, among many staged performances, is where poetry meets performance. It is basically enacting a poem you wrote, expect it needn’t adhere to the routine poem structures that you find on paper. In one of the TED Talks podcasts on Youtube, Sarah Kay, a spoken word poet from New York says, “ Spoken word poetry is the art of performance poetry… it involves creating poetry that just doesn’t want to sit on paper; that something about it demands it (spoken word poetry) be heard out loud or witnessed in person.” In order to pull off a spoken word poem, you’ll need “a heavy use of rhythm, improvisation, free association, rhymes, rich poetic phrases, word play and slang,” states The Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Art in Missouri, USA, in their website.

Reminiscent of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance in Harlem, USA, spoken word poetry came up as a form of rebellion among marginalized African –Americans who were subject to racial discrimination. It later caught on with feminists and the queer community as they voiced out their lyrical contempt to unfair conservative social constructs. Spoken word poetry also started taking ground when a recognized group of poets and musicians of the African-American Civil Rights movement called The Last Poets came around in the 1960s; they are said to be the pioneers of Hip Hop and slam poetry. The Last Poets derived their name from the poems of a South African poet named Keorapetse Kgositsile who believed in “writing poetry before guns and battles would take over”; the African American society shared the same sentiments. With much cause to fight and to express a community’s grief, spoken word poetry found its place in urban culture. As of now, there are several clubs in Major American cities that carry on the slam poetry culture.

In India, spoken word poetry is organized by the Airplane Poetry Movement (APM), an initiative that promotes performance poetry in various cities all over India that includes Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Bangalore with open mic performances, poetry slams and workshops. Poetry slams have the competitive edge to it, where poems are performed without props, costumes or music. After such a performance, the poets are judged by the audience with and applause or ‘polite silences’. In their recent activity, APM teamed up with Menstrupedia that had young poets talking about taboos and issues about menstruation in a podcast called ‘Menstruation Diaries’. There is also a national level slam poetry competition held every year. In Bangalore, APM has organized quite a few poetry workshops and slam poetry events in coffee shops like the Humming Tree and AttaGalatta.
